NAEYC Code of Ethics Ideals

I-1.10—To ensure that each child’s culture, language, ethnicity, and family structure are recognized and valued in the program

This first ideal is meaningful to me because, recently, I have realized how important it is to have a culturally diverse classroom. Children get so excited when they see pictures of people who look like them on the wall. Children from different cultures also enjoy playing with toys from other cultures and exploring them. I also found that children like to learn about other cultures, as well.

I-2.3—To welcome all family members and encourage them to participate in the program.

This ideal is meaningful to me because I am currently a parent at a daycare, and I love it when the teachers include us in the program. I think that this really helps connect home and school, it shows the child that we worked together to teach them.

I-3C.1—To promote safe and healthy working conditions and policies that foster mutual respect, cooperation, collaboration, competence, well-being, confidentiality, and self-esteem in staff members.

This ideal is meaningful to me because nobody wants to work in an unfriendly environment, having an excellent working environment is critical. Personally, I do not like staying at a job where the environment is toxic, it makes it difficult to go to work every day.

  1. Mary, I agree with you. It is important that children have thangs available to them that represent their culture not only for them but the other children to learn about their differences. Family participation is an important for the program as well, it shows the children that parents and teacher are a team and they are both there for them. Early Head Start requires parent’s participation for a child to remain in care. A team that doesn't have respect for each other and willing to work together cause for a drama field environment where children don't receive the best of care.

  2. Mary,
Agreed, a toxic working environment is not conducive to learning. Not only are the educators stressed, but students feed off of this as well. It is fortunate for children that there are like-minded educators that understand the importance of a peaceful learning and working environment.
