Groups

I believe it depends on the type of group you are in, whether it is easy for hard to leave. I have been in many high-performing groups, and some were easy to leave; well, others were hard to leave. I think it has to do with how much you participate and whether or not you like the group. I think it is easier to stay in groups that have established norms, but some people like unpredictability and may prefer those types of groups. One group that was hard to leave was the group I studied abroad with; we took a semester-long class together and spent 2 full weeks in Thailand. We formed a great bond together, but when the trip ended, the group was over. It was hard to leave because we had this amazing life-changing experience together, and nobody else would be able to understand it. The closing ritual that I would have like to experience was a proper goodbye. This ritual would include us sharing pictures and memories of the group and would end with everyone be able to say goodbye. I imagine that I will adjourn from my colleagues from the program bittersweetly. I will be very excited to have completed my degree, but I will also be a little sad, not interacting with my colleagues weekly. I will miss the diverse ideas that each and every person brings to the group. I think adjourning is essential because it means you completed your goal.

  2. Hi Mary,
I beleive the groups that are hardest to leave are those where strong connections were made like the experience you shared. It speaks to the human need for relationship. I am glad to have experienced this educational journey toward a Walden degree with you.

    Warm regards

  3. Mary,
I have to agree that good-byes are difficult when a sincere bond is formed that is unique to the group. You will be an asset to any team with your insights and good luck with achieving your goals!

  4. Mary,
Finding that team that feels like family is great! I had that with my cohort for Education during my undergraduate degree. It was definitely hard to say goodbye. We have had a good and our bad and even our worst times, but we got through it and became more than just friends. There are some people who do not get to experience this, and it is definitely something great to have experienced. Thanks for sharing!

  5. The people in the group can really make it or break it. I have not had great group experiences. So, every time I know I am going to be in a group I just get overwhelmed. Some people just make it bad for everyone.

  6. Mary,
I agree that it is hard to say goodbye to a group you have grown close to. Especially when you have had a life changing experience. I have had very similar experiences and taking the time to say a proper goodbye helps for sure!

  7. Mary,
I agree that the level of participation and personal commitment to the group contributes to how difficult it is to adjourn. I also feel that how close the connections are with other team members contributes to how difficult it is to adjourn. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

  8. Groups can be challenging and it takes a strong leader to take hold of it and keep everyone in line. There can be a lot of Alpha personalities and then there are people that do not want to do the work. Mastering groups are complex.
