One microaggression that I remember from another time is when I was hanging out with my friend and their mom was driving. Whenever a Hispanic person would walk by my friend's mother would hastily lock the car doors. The type of microaggression that was happening was that my friends mom was stereotyping all Hispanics. When I first observed this microaggression I didn't think twice about it, to me this was normal. Looking back I see that this was not a normal response, it was a microaggression towards them. My observations experiences affected my perception of discrimination, prejudice, and stereotypes on people because I realize something. I realized that a lot of the microaggressions we have been talking about are things that I use to not even think about. I realized that a lot of microaggressions are unintentional because some people simply are not aware of microaggressions and the negative effects they can have on people.

Mary,
ReplyDeleteYour experience goes hand in hand with Mario's. He was on the receiving end of the microaggression. I believe fear is one of the factors at the base of this discrimination. It is not right. What role does television have in promoting this fear and discrimination? Where did it come from? Fear is a learned behavior. I love this class and how we can share these delicate experiences and support each other.
Thank you!

Mary, I think that a lot of actions like the one you experienced are common. Do you think those are learned prejudice? Do you think that behavior, is something that your friends mom may have grown up with or do you think a personal experience caused her to be alarmed around Hispanics?
ReplyDeleteHello,
DeleteI think that this prejudice was something that she learned and grew up with. I don't think an previous experience had caused this alarm. It almost seemed like this was a habit for her and she didn't think twice about it.
Hi Mary,
ReplyDeleteOur experiences are extremely similar. It is laughable that there are people in our world who are this paranoid. I completely understand the fear that the media constantly imprints in our brains, but I feel that people do not understand the microinsults that they are providing to us. I hope that one day, people, will not continue on this path of offensiveness. Thank you for sharing!
Hello Mary,
ReplyDeleteThis week's focus has been such an unexpected blessing of knowledge. As we journey through each course experience, many topics have been applied to current practices with hopes of improving. None however, have hit the reflective button in the brain quite like talks of micro aggressions and their impact on individuals, families, and classrooms. Your post brings thoughts of identification through discussions of experiences others have had to endure. It is inspiring the ways in which you and others from our cohort have utilized these experiences to shine a positive light.
Thank you for sharing.
