Research Benefits
One way I have seen a positive benefit of research is when it comes to assessing children who may a learning disability or has a developmental delay. This is usually a very touchy topic for many parents or family members of the child. As an early childcare educator, we have learned countless times the importance of being diagnosed early and intervening early. Early intervention gives the child the greatest chance of overcoming or controlling their disability. I have personally worked with different children who have been diagnosed and children who have not been diagnosed. In my experience, children that were diagnosed at a young age were more developmentally on track then children who were diagnosed later or not diagnosed at all. Whenever I am wondering if I should be having a conversation about the child getting assessed, I always keep in my the importance of being diagnosed early. My personal opinion is that I would get my child tested if I was even the tiniest bit concerned because I want to get them help as early as I can to give them the highest chance of learning.

As educators, knowing the research behind why seeking interventions services earlier than later is so beneficial in communicating with families. Many families are intimidated in seeking these services because of the stigmatization of a diagnosis and possible repercussions later in life from being labeled. These concerns are valid but can possibly be eased by knowing the research behind why and how earlier is better.

ReplyDeleteThank you for your wisdom on this. I have struggled getting the ok to have 4 year olds assessed. I agree that although it is hard for any parent to hear that their might me a hurdle for their child in education if intervention can happen earlier they could possibly cam get on a positive track. We should not wait until they are in kindergarten.

ReplyDeleteEarliest possible intervention actions are of the utmost importance in our field. No matter the dynamics, we all have or will be faced with scenarios you mentioned concerning the screen schedule of young children. Is it ever too early? It's a tough one, but given my experiences...the sooner the better!
